Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef preferably 80/20 for juiciness
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs plain
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 1 sheet puff pastry thawed if frozen
  • 1 egg egg wash beaten, for sealing and gloss
  • additional for decoration thin strips of puff pastry for mummy wrapping
  • optional black sesame seeds or olives for eyes

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Mixing bowls
  • Hot sauce or water (for sealing pastry)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Shape the mixture into small, roughly 1-inch meatballs, placing them on the prepared baking sheet with space between each.
  4. Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and have a nice brown color, then remove and let cool slightly.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet and cut it into thin strips, roughly ¼ inch wide, for wrapping the meatballs.
  6. Wrap each cooled meatball with strips of puff pastry, overlapping slightly to resemble a mummy’s bandages. Leave a small space for the eyes.
  7. Brush the wrapped mummies with the beaten egg wash to give a shiny finish and help seal the pastry.
  8. Decorate the mummy faces with small black sesame seeds or olives for eyes, placing them near the top of each wrapped meatball.
  9. Return the decorated mummies to the oven and bake for an additional 10-12 minutes, until the pastry is golden and crispy.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm as a fun, spooky appetizer with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

For extra creepiness, add some cut strips of black nori for hair or spooky face designs.
