Method
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Shape the mixture into small, roughly 1-inch meatballs, placing them on the prepared baking sheet with space between each.
- Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and have a nice brown color, then remove and let cool slightly.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet and cut it into thin strips, roughly ¼ inch wide, for wrapping the meatballs.
- Wrap each cooled meatball with strips of puff pastry, overlapping slightly to resemble a mummy’s bandages. Leave a small space for the eyes.
- Brush the wrapped mummies with the beaten egg wash to give a shiny finish and help seal the pastry.
- Decorate the mummy faces with small black sesame seeds or olives for eyes, placing them near the top of each wrapped meatball.
- Return the decorated mummies to the oven and bake for an additional 10-12 minutes, until the pastry is golden and crispy.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm as a fun, spooky appetizer with your favorite dipping sauces.
Notes
For extra creepiness, add some cut strips of black nori for hair or spooky face designs.
