Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken wings drumettes and flats
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce preferably dark soy for richness
  • 2 tablespoons honey for caramelization and shine
  • 1 clove garlic minced fresh garlic
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil optional, for added flavor
  • to taste salt and pepper for seasoning

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Mixing bowl

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat for easy cleanup.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, honey, minced garlic, sesame oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Whisk together until smooth and well blended.
  3. Add the chicken wings to the bowl and toss thoroughly to coat each piece evenly in the marinade. Let them sit for 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  4. Arrange the coated wings in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them out so they don’t touch.
  5. Place the wings in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, turning halfway through, until they are golden and crispy around the edges, and the marinade has caramelized into a glossy coating.
  6. Remove the wings from the oven and let them cool slightly to firm up the glaze. Using kitchen scissors or a knife, cut some of the wings into bat wing shapes by trimming the tips and creating small wing 'fingers,' if desired.
  7. Arrange the shaped wings on a serving platter, with some positioned to resemble bats with outstretched wings. Use more marinade or a toothpick to add tiny details or fix shapes if needed.
  8. Serve immediately to enjoy the crispy texture and sticky, savory glaze, perfect for Halloween festivities.

Notes

To enhance the bat shape, use kitchen scissors to carefully trim wing tips into points, and attach extra 'wings' with more glaze if needed. For extra crunch, sprinkle panko breadcrumbs on top before baking.
