Method
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease the cake pan and set aside.
- Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples into rings or half-moons. Arrange the slices to cover the bottom of the cake pan in an even layer.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and ground cardamom until well combined.
- Add the melted butter, eggs, and milk to the dry ingredients. Whisk until the batter is smooth and slightly thickened.
- Pour the batter evenly over the apple slices in the cake pan, smoothing the surface with a spatula.
- Slide the pan into the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes. Then, carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate, exposing the caramelized apple topping.
- If desired, dust the top with powdered sugar for a finishing touch. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
Use firm apples for best texture. The cake can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat gently before serving if desired.
