Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cardamom
  • 2 large apples firm, such as Fuji or Honeycrisp
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • 9-inch cake pan or springform pan
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Peeler
  • Sharp knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease the cake pan and set aside.
  2. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples into rings or half-moons. Arrange the slices to cover the bottom of the cake pan in an even layer.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and ground cardamom until well combined.
  4. Add the melted butter, eggs, and milk to the dry ingredients. Whisk until the batter is smooth and slightly thickened.
  5. Pour the batter evenly over the apple slices in the cake pan, smoothing the surface with a spatula.
  6. Slide the pan into the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes. Then, carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate, exposing the caramelized apple topping.
  8. If desired, dust the top with powdered sugar for a finishing touch. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Use firm apples for best texture. The cake can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat gently before serving if desired.
